Most people learn about fallacies at school around 9th grade but they are easily forgettable because of the way they are taught. This article will change your perspective on how to approach them in real life so they can finally feel useful. It will teach you how to spot them, how to counter them and how to use them to your advantage so you can become a better communicator.

What is a logical fallacy?

It is a flaw in reasoning that weakens an argument. Ironically, when it goes unspotted, it can make that argument sound persuasive. The most common tactics are diversion, false binaries, and misdirection.

Keep this in mind before reading the list.

Never say the name of the fallacy. "That's an ad hominem." Calling them out by saying the names of the fallacies will shift the conversation to a different topic than what you were actually arguing at first (especially because most people don't even know them). So instead, describe their bad reasoning in simpler words.

A fallacy doesn't make them wrong. "1 + 1 = 2 because my mum said so." Catching a fallacy only means their reasoning is wrong. Their main point could still hold true. That is why you should only spend time discussing the ones that actually matter.

Sometimes the best move is silence. Be strategic about which of the other person's fallacies you choose to discuss, so you can frame the conversation the way you want it to go. Sometimes it's wise to stay completely silent — when the conversation escalates quickly, or when you're dealing with certain profiles (manipulators, overly emotional people…). Keep your peace. The goal isn't to win arguments but rather to become a better communicator.

1. Ad Hominem
They attack you instead of your point.
"You've been here six months. I've been doing this for twelve years." They discredit you to support their own point. This isn't a valid argument.

Best counter: Concede and put back the main point. "You're right, I'm new. However, my point remains untouched. How does that change whether the idea works?" This allows you to drain all the charge out of the attack and to quickly get back to what is actually important.
This is one of those fallacies that are not even worth responding to in certain scenarios. An attack that goes unanswered because it obviously didn't deserve an answer costs the attacker more than it costs you.

2. Straw Man
They twist your point into a dumber version, then attack that.
You: "I think we should watch our spending a bit more this month." Them: "So now you think I'm irresponsible with money."They transform what you said into what you didn't say.

Best counter: Refuse the part they twisted, add a sentence drawing the line the qualifier implies and then put the main point back in the form of a question. "I think you are responsible with money. Being more careful for one month has nothing to do with how responsible you are. Do we agree we should be more careful?"

Don't spend time talking about the exaggerated version they made. The moment you start explaining why you're not actually accusing them of being irresponsible, you've accepted the swap and you're arguing a case you never made.

You: "People like you think we should just open the borders."They start making the argument about the belief of a group but not you.

Best counter: Simply restate the position with more precision than the caricature. "My position is that we should clear the visa backlog before adding new intake." Do not make the same error as above by spending time on the group they are associating you with. Ignore the category completely. Don't name it, don't accept it, don't reject it.

3. Appeal to Emotion
They skip the argument and talk about the emotion.
"After everything I've done for this team, I'd have thought you'd back me on this."
They try to make you feel like an ungrateful person and they move the conversation to another topic.
Best counter: Acknowledge the emotional part and go straight back to the main topic. "I do appreciate all of it, genuinely. Does that make this the right call?"
How to counter it generally: Never dismiss the feeling. Emotional intelligence is about understanding their feelings without letting them manipulate you. Take it seriously, and then show it can't decide anything.
You can't argue against their emotions. Every side of every argument has one, which means emotion can't be the tiebreaker.

4. Red Herring
They say something true but unrelated to pull you off track.
You: "The report was three days late." Them: "I've been carrying this team all quarter."
It could be true but it doesn't answer the question.
Best counter: Acknowledge the true part and go straight back to your point. "You have, and I'm not disputing that. What happened with the report?"
Do not ignore the diversion because you could be accused of dodging. Explicitly setting it aside makes the diversion visible without you having to call it one.

They justify their conduct by pointing at others.
"You're on me about being late? Half this team rolls in at ten."
Best counter: Accept it completely and explain that something else being wrong doesn't make this right. "You're right about them, and I'll deal with that separately. This does not change the expectations for all of you."
Granting the first part fully collapses the deflection and puts back the focus on your point. The trap to avoid is to defend the comparison instead of your original question.

6. False Dilemma
They give you two options when there are always more.
"Either we launch in March or we lose the whole year."
There's a version that launches in April. There's a version that launches half of it in March. They don't address any of those alternatives.
Best counter: Simply ask, "Why are those the only two options?" Take neither, and make them defend the wall rather than the doors.
Don't lead with your own third option, because they'll refuse it right away and you're back arguing on their terms. Put the burden on them to prove the binary was ever real.

7. Slippery Slope
They claim that one small action leads straight to disaster.
"If we ban hate speech, next they'll ban criticizing the government, and eventually all speech will be illegal."
They go from step one to step ten, with everything in between missing. It is a possible risk but they present it as the only outcome.

Best counter: Point out that their scenario is not the only possible outcome. Then, make them walk you through the middle. "That is a risk, not a guarantee. What's the actual mechanism that gets us from hate speech being illegal to all kinds of speech made illegal? What makes you think this case is likely to slide, instead of getting stopped the way it does in systems with real safeguards?" This forces them to give real logical arguments (if they had any in the first place).

Do not try to prove the slope is impossible because it can sometimes be real. The real problem is that slippery slopes are usually false dilemmas in disguise. They try to present the small step and the disaster as the only two destinations. So rather point out that their scenario is not the default outcome. Ask what specifically would have to fail (courts, opposition, public pushback) for this to actually happen, and whether there's reason to think it's failing here.

8. Appeal to Authority
They lean on the credibility of a person instead of the reasoning behind it.
"My doctor said carbs are basically poison."
It could be true. But no mechanism, no study, no context on what she actually said or who she said it to. Just the title doing all the work.

Best counter: Ask for the reasoning. "What was her actual reasoning? Why would carbs do that?"
It's important to note that trusting experts isn't a mistake, it's usually correct. However, an expert's word is evidence, not proof. The logic only breaks when it's treated as proof, or when the expert is speaking outside their field.

There are usually two possible outcomes from countering this way. They either can't actually give real proof, which implicitly lets everyone know their argument is weak. The second option is that they back it up with real reasoning and the debate goes on.

9. Hasty Generalization
A case turned into a rule.
"I tried that diet for a week and gained weight. It doesn't work."
The specific anecdote of one person becomes absolute evidence.

Best counter: "I believe you. However, your case doesn't necessarily make it a general rule. What else convinced you either way?"

Do not attack their experience because it can escalate the argument really quickly. The real logical flaw in their argument is linked to the sample size.
This is the most common reasoning error in normal life. A personal experience often feels more real and convincing than statistics to the person who lived it, but that doesn't make it a general rule. That's exactly why the counter has to validate the experience before questioning what it proves.

10. False Cause

Because of the order of events, one action is assumed to have caused the other.
"I started taking vitamin C and my cold cleared up in three days." Could be true, but colds usually clear up within three days anyway. The vitamin C might not have had an effect.

Best counter: Acknowledge their statement and simply contradict it with facts. "You could be right, but colds generally clear up within three days either way. What makes you say it was the vitamin C?"
There is no need to tell them they're wrong. You're pointing out they've only observed one of the two things you'd need.

**It's right because it's what we've always done.
"We've always done it this way."
No matter how long a practice or tradition has been in place, it might not be the best way.

Best counter: Don't attack the tradition, attack the assumption that it's still fit for purpose. "That worked well for the reason we started it. Here's a way to serve that same purpose, but even better. Do you want to try it alongside the old way first?"
Some practices are worth keeping when they're tied to culture. And even when they aren't, ego makes a habit very hard to change. The idea is to avoid fighting about the reliability of the practice or saying it was ever wrong. You're proposing better alternatives.

12. Sunk Cost
Time or money already spent, treated as a reason to continue.
"We've already put six months into this."
Just like in finance, those six months are a sunk cost. They are gone regardless of what you decide now.

Best counter: "If we were starting today, knowing what we know now, would we choose this? The six months are gone either way. The only real question is what month seven is worth."
This question is the whole counter, and it makes the argument very hard to dodge in most cases. All the attention is brought into the present tense instead of the past. However, you can expect more resistance on this one, because abandoning something feels like admitting the earlier spend was wasted. This is probably the most expensive fallacy on the list, and it's the one people defend hardest.

13. Cherry Picking
They show the data that fits and leave out the data that doesn't.
"Three clients told me they love the new pricing."
The data is real but it is missing crucial information.
Best counter: Ask specific questions about the data. "Three out of how many?"
It's important to force them to give the entire picture by asking precise questions. Vague requests get dodged every time. Ask for the specific number those examples came out of.

14. Circular Reasoning
The proof is just the claim again in different words.
"That's how we do it here because that's our process."
The sentence walks in a circle and lands back where it started. It is often used to fill the gap for their missing arguments.

Best counter: Read the loop back in flat, plain words. "So it's the process because it's the process. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying there's no reason in there yet. What's the process actually for?"
Saying the circle out loud without its disguise does all the work. The key is to keep a respectful tone and not mock the other person. It's often very effective at ending endless arguments.
